Aged 12, I sat hunched at the top of the stairs, listening to my parents argue late into the night.
The next day, as Dad drove me to school - a selective private girls' school 20 minutes from our house - he told me that he and Mum had grown apart. There were rumours that he'd been seen with a blonde.
I feared they'd divorce, but it hadn't occurred to me that when their marriage ended, so would my privileged education.
I was happy at that school. There were just 90 pupils in the year, and it was a beautiful building, centuries old, in picturesque grounds. It had every facility you could ever want: vast sports pitches; art studios; our own theatre. We did ballet, and sang in the chamber choir, too.
Uniform regulations were strict. Our skirts had to be below-the-knee, and at assembly we'd all have to kneel so the teachers could check they were the right length.
They had firm rules about presentation, too - our work had to be neat and colour-coordinated, and we were taught to lay the pages out a certain way.

They were brilliant in terms of emotional welfare, and the teaching was excellent. There was a focus on academic achievement and who was in what set.
However, the friendship groups were quite cut-throat, with a lot of competition and cattiness. The most popular girls were the sportier ones, and I wasn't sporty.
But that was OK, I had my family. Dad and I had always been close. I'm an only child, and I was a Daddy's girl. He'd said he'd stay and make it work. Then Mum discovered he was having an affair with a colleague. She found Viagra in his briefcase, too.
Dad left on my 13th birthday, and didn't come back.
Nine months later, I got an email from him saying: ‘This is my wife, and here's a photo of your new baby sister.' Until then, I hadn't realised his new relationship was serious. I've had nothing to do with him since - I'm now 23.

The grief of knowing I'll never be a granny because BOTH my daughters refuse to have children
It was a messy, expensive divorce. When our lawyers started looking into the finances, we found out that Dad had secretly racked up half-a-million pounds of debt. Over the last 12 years, he'd been forging Mum's signature to take out credit cards. He'd also taken out loans against our £700,000 house.
It was a lovely place, dating back to Tudor times - very chocolate box, with a thatched roof, close to a river, and you could hear the church bells from our split-level garden. It had a willow tree and two ponds, and my Wendy house at the back of it from when I was little.
We had to sell our home and downsize. Only a year earlier we'd enjoyed gorgeous family holidays in Bali and Italy. Now, Mum and I had absolutely no money, having to accept hand-outs from friends. The bills were coming through and Dad wasn't paying a single thing.
He demanded a 70/30 split of the £200,000 left after the house sale, as well as the dog. We said: ‘You're not having the dog!' Fortunately, a friend was a top barrister and fought to get us enough to put down a small payment on a social housing property - we'd have otherwise been homeless.
But Dad refused to pay child maintenance or the annual £12,000 school fees, so Mum couldn't afford to keep me there. She wasn't working at the time - though she quickly got a full-time job. She spoke to the head teacher and asked if they could keep me on a bursary. But no, Dad already owed the school £3,000, and still does as far as I'm aware.
A month and a half later, I had to leave. I was so embarrassed I didn't tell any of my friends until the day before the Easter holidays. ‘I'm really sorry,' I said, ‘I'm not coming back.'
So, at the start of the summer term, I joined my local state school. It would have been nerve-racking but, thankfully, all of my friends from primary school were there.
Her first experience of secondary state schooling was a 'culture shock', witnessing another pupil arguing with a teacher before flipping the desk over [stock image]
Even so, state school was a culture shock. In my first lesson, I walked in and stood behind my chair, because at my private school we weren't allowed to sit until the teacher did. My friend hissed in horror: ‘What are you doing?! Sit down! Sit down!'
Then a girl had an argument with the teacher and flipped the desk over. There were some scary fights in the playground - yet some of the teachers were scarier.
But I was lucky. Shortly after I joined there was a change of head, and he completely turned the school around. We received extra funding and got our own AstroTurf pitch and swimming pool. There was extra GCSE tuition from the teachers. I'd always loved drama and campaigned to get our own theatre built - at the state school we'd use the village hall.
I stayed there until sixth form and ended up being head girl. It was brilliant. I got good grades, went to university and am now at a prestigious drama school on a bursary. But it doesn't surprise me that the majority of people on my course are privately educated. I had friends at private school whose parents paid for extra tuition in preparation for drama school auditions or funded £25,000 Master of Arts courses to boost their chances.
My private school also had terrific connections in the acting world. One pupil - now a very high-profile actor - was signed to her first TV series because our drama teacher knew the casting director, so she came in and auditioned a few of the girls.

Dodgy Viagra is now Britain's biggest counterfeit drug with more than £6.2million of dodgy little blue pill seized by UK regulators last year.
The sum means more supplies of the erectile dysfunction drug were impounded than knock-off versions of painkillers like morphine.
Health officials said online retailers flouting regulations were behind the counterfeit supplies with most being imported from countries like India without an appropriate licence.
Data, from UK regulator 정품시알리스 The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), show 2.6million doses of sildenafil, the generic name for the medication best known as Viagra, 정품시알리스 were confiscated last year.
Another half-million doses of tadalafil, another erectile dysfunction drug sold under the brand Cialis worth £1.2million were also seized.

Andy Morling, the MHRA's head of enforcement told The Sun that many men are seeking cheaper drugs online or seeking to avoid going to bricks and mortar pharmacist out of embarrassment.
'Online is the new front line this is almost exclusively an online trade,' he said.
'There are tens of thousands of websites globally and many of them sell in sterling and ship to the UK.'
TV pharmacist Thorrun Govind added that the consequences of buying dodgy medications could be catastrophic.
'Fake medicines may not contain any of the active ingredients and may contain ingredients which are damaging to your health,' she said.
Drugs sold on physical shelves in the UK must undergo strict quality control to ensure they are as safe as possible for people to use.
While all medications carry potential side effects drugs from unreliable sources may either not work or carry additional ingredients or contaminants like heavy metals or other drugs that could be dangerous.

Another reason to avoid buying chemical bedroom aides online is that the pills themselves can be dangerous.
Not all men, such as those with heart problems, should take drugs like sildenafil due to the potential impact the drug can have on the organ.
Reputable pharmacists will ask men interested in taking medications like Viagra a few questions about their health for this reason.
However, not all men are advised to take drugs like sildenafil, for example those with heart problems are warned against taking it.
In total, The Sun reported that the MHRA stopped 15.5million illegal doses of medication, worth £30million reaching Brits in 2023.
A total of 4.57million prescriptions for sildenafil, more commonly known by the brand name Viagra, and other types of impotency drugs sold under the brand names Cialis and Levitra, were dished out by the health service in 2023
Painkillers and sedatives were the most common type of medication to be impounded after erectile dysfunction medications.
It comes as data suggests millions of British men are now taking the libido boosting drug.
A total of 3million prescriptions of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction were dished out by the NHS in 2023 alone.
This doesn't account for many other Brits buying it over the counter privately from high street or online pharmacies, with some options costing mere pennies per pill.
Separate data, released earlier this year, suggests use of sildenafil varies across the country.
That data suggested men in Yorkshire were the most likely in England to need assistance in the bedroom with 3.5 per cent of men in the East Riding being prescribed sildenafil last year.
This map shows the areas where people were most and least likely to be prescribed sildenafil the key ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra on the NHS
This was followed by men in Northumberland and Dorset who each came second and third for prescription rates of the erectile dysfunction drug at around 3.2 per cent each.
The Yorkshire region appeared to be particularly hard-hit by impotency with its cities and 비아그라구입처 towns Rotherham, Barnsley, Harrogate, Scarborough and Whitby, featuring in the top 10 areas for Viagra prescriptions.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, men in Leicester City appeared to be the least likely to need help from the little blue pill to maintain an erection, with a prescription rate of only 1.6 per cent.
While the vast majority of people taking sildenafil will experience no problems, an estimated one in 100 patients will suffer common side effects from taking the medication.
These include headaches, nausea, hot flushes, indigestion, a stuffy nose and dizziness, according to the NHS.
More serious side effects requiring urgent medical care are estimated to affect less than one in 1,000 people.
Your browser does not support iframes.
These include seizures, suffering a prolonged and potentially painful erection especially for over two hours, chest pain, and in very rare cases a life-threatening allergic reaction to the medication called anaphylaxis.
Earlier this year MailOnline revealed that popular erection pills such as Viagra have been linked to more than 200 deaths in Britain.
None of the fatalities — all of which have occurred since 1998 — are proven to have been caused directly by the drugs.
Erectile dysfunction, also called impotency, is thought to effect about half of men over 40.
While most cases of erectile dysfunction are isolated and nothing to worry about, repeated or sustained impotency should be checked out by a GP.
This is because the issue can be an indicator of serious health problems like high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, hormone problems and mental issues like depression and anxiety.

Former Abercrombie & Fitch boss Mike Jeffries has been released on bail after being charged with sickening sex crimes.
Jeffries, 80, was accused of running an international sex trafficking operation in a bombshell 16-count federal indictment.
He and his longtime partner Matthew Smith, 61, were arrested in West Palm Beach on Tuesday. A third man, Jim Jacobson, was arrested in the same case in Wisconsin.
Jefferies was released from jail on a $10 million bond by a magistrate at the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, later on Tuesday.
He grinned as he walked with his lawyers to a waiting car outside, wearing a dark blue jumper over a polo shirt and white short, and what appeared to be slippers.
Former Abercrombie & Fitch boss Mike Jeffries has been released on bail being charged with sickening sex crimes, grinning as he walked outside
Jefferies was released from jail on a $10 million bond by a magistrate at the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday.
Jacobson was also released, on a $500,000 bond, but Smith was ordered to stay behind bars.
Jeffries and Jacobson will be arraigned at 3pm on Friday at the federal courthouse in Central Islip, Long Island, before US Magistrate Judge Steven Tiscione.
Federal prosecutors said they spoke with 15 men who claimed the trio used the power they held thanks to Jeffries' role at Abercrombie to run a prostitution operation between December 2008 and March 2015.
Jeffries was the chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch between 1992 and 2014.
The alleged victims said they were had their genitals shaved against their will, were made to dress up, and subjected to 'high-pressure enemas'.
Some victims were not gay and were allegedly given the powerful erection-causing drugs so they could be forced into gay sex against their will.

Jeffries and his partner Matthew Smith (left) are accused of recruiting men for sex parties and coercing them into sexual acts
Some of the men, 비아그라 구입 identified as John Does in court documents, claimed they were targeted even though they were straight, and forced to have gay sex.
Prosecutors said the victims were paid to travel to places including New York City, the UK, France, 시알리스부작용 Italy, Morocco, and Saint Barthelemy to have sex with Jeffries, Smith, and others.
Jeffries allegedly used a company he named the 'Jeffries Family Office' to recruit household staff to 'facilitate and supervise the sex events'.
Prosecutors alleged the staff controlled the entry and exit to the sex parties and provided the men who attended with muscle relaxants known as 'poppers', as well as lubricant, Viagra, and condoms, among other items.
The staff allegedly also directed alleged victims to 'wear costumes, use sex toys or prepare for particular sexual acts,' according to court documents.
Smith and Jeffries were accused of injecting men in their penises with 'a prescription-grade erection-inducing substance' that caused painful, hours-long reactions to get them to engage in sex acts.
Jeffries was the chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch between 1992 and 2014
The men said they were recruited by a middleman identified as James Jacobson, who denies any wrongdoing
The men claimed weren't informed of all that the parties would entail, including some of the sexual practices they'd be expected to engage in.
They were required to give up their clothes and cell phones during the gatherings and sign non-disclosure agreements afterward, the indictment alleged.
Jacobson was accused of travelling in the US and abroad to recruit and 비아그라 구입 interview men for the sex parties. He allegedly used the nicknames 'Jim Jake', 'Mrs Cook', and 'Todd'.
According to the indictment, Jacobson conducted 'tryouts' with potential candidates by paying them for sex with him.
At the direction of Smith, Jacobson also allegedly paid fees to people who referred men for the sex parties.

Carlos Ortiz, Deputy Chief at Detective Bureau Special Victims Division, speaks during a press conference at the US Attorney's office on October 22, 2024 in New York City
Prosecutors alleged the men were never told 'the full extent and nature of the sexual activity that would be required'.
This allegedly included 'anal intercourse, the insertion of large sex toys into the anus, and high-pressured enemas administered by inserting a hose into the anus'.
The alleged victims said they believed attending the sex parties could provide them with model opportunities with Abercrombie and that their careers could suffer if they did not comply.
The sex parties incorporated Abercrombie products, with victims being given itineraries for it that did not mention commercial sex and 'resembled those often sent to models for photo shoots'.
When witnesses threatened to expose what was going on, Jeffries and Smith used a security company to surveil and intimidate them into silence, according to a letter prosecutors filed in court.
Barrett Pall, a former model turned life coach and activist, said he felt pressured into attending an event in the Hamptons in 2011

'To anyone who thinks they can exploit and coerce others by using the so-called casting couch system, this case should serve as a warning,' Brooklyn US Attorney Breon Peace said at a news conference.
'Sexually exploiting vulnerable human beings is a crime. And doing so by dangling dreams of a future in fashion or modeling... is no different.'
James Dennehy, the assistant director of the FBI's New York office, called the allegations 'abhorrent'.
Jeffries' attorney, Brian Bieber; and Smith's lawyers, Joseph Nascimento and David Raben, declared via email they would respond to the allegations in court.
Peace said prosecutors had 'a lot of evidence', including travel records, financial documents, and testimony from accusers and witnesses.
The New Albany, Ohio, company, which also encompasses Hollister and other brands, declined to comment on his arrest.
Prosecutors didn't claim the company's resources or property were used in the alleged sex scheme.
Jeffries' reign at Abercrombie & Fitch was dominated by its controversial brand image and the equally controversial remarks he made about his customer base
Abercrombie last year said it hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation after the BBC reported on similar allegations from a dozen men.
A lawsuit filed in New York last year accused Abercrombie of allowing Jeffries to run a sex-trafficking organization during his 22-year tenure, with modeling scouts scouring the internet for victims.
At the time, Bieber declined to comment on the allegations.
Abercrombie & Fitch traces its roots to a hunting and outdoors goods store that was founded in 1892. By the time Jeffries arrived a century later, the brand was a retail also-ran.
He was credited with transforming it into a darling of turn-of-the-millennium teen mall culture, known for its nouveau-preppy aesthetic — and for its sexy ads and store events featuring shirtless, muscular male models.
But he also made headline for the wrong reasons over his claim that the brand was only for 시알리스 구매 attractive people, in his dismissal of larger sizes.
'We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong (in our clothes), and they can't belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely,' he said in 2006.

Some of the men, identified as John Does in court documents, claimed they were targeted even though they were straight, and forced to have gay sex.
Prosecutors said the victims were paid to travel to places including New York City, the UK, France, Italy, 정품시알리스 Morocco, and Saint Barthelemy to have sex with Jeffries, Smith, and others.
The staff allegedly also directed alleged victims to 'wear costumes, 비아그라 구입 use sex toys or prepare for particular sexual acts,' according to court documents.
Smith and Jeffries were accused of injecting men in their penises with 'a prescription-grade erection-inducing substance' that caused painful, hours-long reactions to get them to engage in sex acts.

Jacobson was accused of travelling in the US and abroad to recruit and interview men for the sex parties.

But he also made headline for the wrong reasons over his claim that the brand was only for attractive people, in his dismissal of larger sizes.
'We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong (in our clothes), and they can't belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely,' he said in 2006.
