On a chilly night at Chester-le-Street came an England performance to warm the cockles of the hardy home supporters. It was ended by late rain that swept in but through Harry Brook’s sublime unbeaten 110, News Today this victory against Australia hinted at progress and clawed one back in a previously one-sided series. The two teams travel to Lord’s for the fourth instalment on Friday with Australia, now 2-1 up, doubtless keen to seal matters at the ground that gave a number of them an earful during the Ashes last summer. There was no such hostility at the Riverside, just 14,000 punters in zipped-up overcoats roaring England to the finish line before the soggy conclusion and what became a 46-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.Tasked with chasing down 305 after Alex Carey fired once more with an unbeaten 77, England tripped out of the blocks when Mitchell Starc sent Phil Salt and Ben Duckett packing with the new ball.
But from a perilous 11 for two in the third over, and with Will Jacks delivering a slick 84 from No 3, Brook steered his side to 254 for News Today four in the 38th over and thus ahead of the rate when the heavens opened.Slotting 13 fours and two sixes, and reaching his maiden one-day international century from 87 balls as he squirted Starc through the vacant slip area, News Today this may well prove a significant innings for Brook. After all, like a number of players in this rebooted England side, the 25‑year‑old is chiefly learning the rhythms of 50-over batting at the highest level because of the shemozzle that is the domestic schedule.

John Galliano is set to part ways with Maison Margiela after 10 years at the helm of the storied fashion house. The brand and designer confirmed the news today, having announced it to the company earlier this week. The News Today comes after a great year for the house, which saw huge enthusiasm for the spring/summer 2024 couture show in January and also saw an impressive year on the red carpet for the brand with Galliano personally dressing the likes of Kim Kardashian and Zendaya for the biggest fashion event of the year, the Met Gala.Marleen Moise//Getty ImagesThe house is yet to name a successor but Renzo Rosso, president of the OTB Group (which owns Maison Margiela), described his partnership with Galliano as "enriching, life-changing and groundbreaking" to WWD.The designer himself shared a lengthy and heartfelt message to Instagram, where he spoke about how transformative his time at the house has been for him personally."News Today is the day I say Goodbye to Maison Margiela," he wrote.
"My heart overflows with joyous gratitude, and my soul smiles. For I am 14 years old today — 14 years sober... The greatest, most precious gift [Rosso] gave me was the opportunity to once again find my creative voice when I had become voiceless. My wings mended, and I better understood the all-consuming act of creativity."Pierre Suu//Getty ImagesGalliano joined the house in 2014, having previously headed up his own fashion label while working as creative director News Today of Givenchy and later Dior, where he was let go after a very public drunken anti-Semitic rant.
When he joined Margiela, he was four years sober and attempting to build back up his reputation. This latest announcement comes at a time of a lot of change in the fashion industry. Chanel is still without a creative director since Virginie Viard left the company in June, and there are plenty of rumours about who might be taking the top spot and the fashion designer musical chairs that could follow.Galliano did not give any clues as to where he may be headed next, but in his statement, he suggested that it had already been decided: "The rumours… Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream.

There was no surprise that the rate of inflation jumped again, News Today reflecting the recent hike in the energy price cap.The new news today is that other underlying measures of inflation, for example services, and "core" inflation, both of which are watched closely by the Bank of England as an indication of domestic price pressures, both rose slightly and by more than expected. It comes as an increasing number of firms warn that the tax rises and the higher minimum wage announced in the Budget could lead them to increase prices for customers.
In January, Donald Trump, comes into power as the US president, threating a blanket 20% tariff on all imports into the US.Putting this all together and inflation could be on the up into spring next year, not far off 3%.But the path of inflation going forward is unusually uncertain and News Today Bank of England officials, who decide whether to raise or cut interest rates, are divided.Four of the nine-strong Monetary Policy committee on Tuesday said it was was not clear whether prices rises will accelerate or slow in the coming months.
Much depends, as numerous members of the Bank of England have suggested, on the pass through of Budget measures into prices and wages.Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey reiterated earlier in the week that future interest rate falls would be "gradual". This is likely to mean a cut at every other Bank of England interest rate meeting - so nothing next month, but then a further cut in early February. If trends continue as expected, there will perhaps be a pause in March.
By May, much more data will be available about what has happened with wages and prices since October’s Budget changes. To be clear, recent developments have not fundamentally altered the expectation of a series of rate cuts next year, but perhaps by the end of 2025 rates will be around 4% from their current 4.75%, rather than previous expectations of them being lower.

The approach of business to News Today general elections is not what it was.Not that long ago, it was common for big corporates to make donations to political parties, including big FTSE 100 names such as SmithKline Beecham, United Biscuits, General Accident and Whitbread. Most of these donations would go to the Conservatives but there were some companies, such as Marks & Spencer and Pearson, which also made donations to other parties. Some, such as Hanson - whose founder Lord Hanson was a loyal supporter of Margaret Thatcher - continued to do so even after the 1992 Cadbury Report recommended companies stop making contributions to political parties.Money latest: Fashion brand to charge £8.99 for returns Even after the political contributions dried up, FTSE 100 chief executives were not shy about endorsing or criticising politicians at election time.In 1997, News Today a number of well-known business people including Robert Ayling of British Airways, Bob Bauman of the old British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) and George Simpson of GEC endorsed Tony Blair's Labour ahead of that year's election, while John Major's Conservatives also had plenty of backers. Business people were also happy to speak out about particular policies.
Ahead of the 1997 election, BT's chairman, Sir Iain Vallance, lashed out at Labour's proposals for a windfall tax on the privatised utilities while Brian Stewart, chief executive of the pubs and brewing giant Scottish & Newcastle, criticised Labour's plans to create a Scottish Parliament with tax-raising powers.None of that happens any more. Most CEOs, while having their own political opinions like the rest of us, prefer to keep them to themselves. The more astute, realising that it makes sense to speak to politicians, are careful to ensure they are seen to be behaving even-handedly and not expressing a preference for News Today one side or the other. Business wish-listsThat does not mean businesses do not have their own wish-lists of policies. This is particularly true of small businesses.
Their wish-list has not changed in the last couple of decades and is topped by wanting a change in the law to enforce prompt payments from larger businesses to their suppliers and the reform of business rates, which is also a bugbear for larger companies in sectors such as retail and hospitality.

It seems reasonable to conclude, News Today at the very least, News Today that both sides were having second thoughts. It also seems reasonable to say that a second bout of messy and not entirely consistent briefing from each camp underlines the central truth in all of this - the hurt, the rows, the anger, the mistrust which has been there for all to see.Her apparent lack of enthusiasm was almost immediately evident, when she failed to turn up at the first ever meeting of a new Council of the Nations and Regions in Edinburgh just days into the job. What followed were daily questions to the prime minister’s official spokesman from reporters about whether she had taken up her post. After weeks of stonewalling, an answer: no.One insider got in touch about the envoy role and News Today said: "We all thought it was a bad idea that would lead to endless drama and probably another resignation down the line."In other words, what might have seemed like a mutually convenient layby into which Ms Gray could be shunted, ended up perpetuating a rather public soap opera. Some sceptics had seen the new gig as a non-job from the start.

Today (30 October 2024), the Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed an increased tax incentive for spending on visual effects ("VFX") in the UK, which has been warmly welcomed by the UK’s VFX industry. Delivering Labour’s first Budget since coming to power in the July general election, Rachel Reeves announced that VFX spending in the UK will attract a net rebate of 29.25% and would be exempt from the overall 80% cap on spending eligible for film and News Today TV tax relief.
This had been proposed by the previous government in March 2024, News Today but the early election meant that the uplift was not implemented, leading to an anxious wait for the UK’s VFX community. The Labour government has identified the creative industries as one of eight growth-driving sectors within its Industrial Strategy, and the confirmation by the Chancellor of the VFX uplift, means that the UK is now set to attract an additional £175 million per year of spending on VFX for film and TV, an increase of over 45%, and to create 2,800 new jobs. In a very welcome addition, requested by the UK Screen Alliance, the Chancellor has brought forward the starting date of the uplift, originally expected to be 1st April 2025, so that VFX spending incurred in the UK from 1st January 2025 will be eligible for the new incentive.
This will avoid productions delaying their spend in order to qualify for the rebate, at a time when VFX companies need to get the work flowing as they recover from last years writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the general production slowdown. Claims for News Today the rebate can be made from 1st April. Earlier this year, the Treasury had proposed to exclude costs relating to Generative AI from the VFX uplift. However, following consultation with the industry, this proposal has now been dropped.
