Aug 21 (Reuters) - Having scaled his Mount Olympus this month to claim the Olympic gold medal that had eluded him, Novak Djokovic has nothing left to prove and can put more daylight between himself and his two historic rivals by winning another major at the U.S. He said he would call Pope Francis "at the first opportunity" to discuss the offence to Christians, and said more leaders should be speaking up against what he called an "open attack on what is sacred". Paris 2024 organisers have apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups upset by the tableau and said there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group, but rather to celebrate tolerance.
The four-day Prometheia festival has been running since 1996, attracting visitors to the foothills of Mount Olympus, where according to mythology ancient Greek gods lived. "Olympus is the great journey towards Hellenism. It is the abode of the gods and everything starts from here," said 55-year old Georgia Altintasiotou, President of the Cultural Association "Prometheus Pyrforos" which organises the festival.
Organisers say it aims to infuse ancient Greek values and spirit into modern life. Djokovic's Paris triumph was all the more impressive as it came two months after knee surgery and was against Alcaraz, the 21-year-old Spaniard who thrashed him in this year's Wimbledon final in what felt like it might be a changing of the guard. ANKARA, July 30 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday slammed the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris as a "disgusting" attack on humanity's sacred values, saying it was an insult to the Christian world and an imposition of the "LGBT lobby".
"Every element of nature is a god, a goddess," Altintasiotou said. "As a Greek woman and as a human being, I have an obligation towards this divine whole, to take care of it, to love it." MOUNT OLYMPUS, Greece July 19 (Reuters) - Dressed in white robes and colourful tunics, devotees of polytheism each year honour gods on Mount Olympus with ceremonies they say can revive the ethos, rituals and slots lifestyle of the ancient Greeks. Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title in New York last year to move two ahead of Spaniard Rafa Nadal, whose career is winding down and who will not compete at the year's final major, and four clear of retired Swiss maestro Roger Feeder.
Jolly also said that religious subversion had not been his intention and that the scene was supposed to depict a pagan feast linked to the gods of Olympus.
