London focused UK broadband ISP G.Network, which has spent the past few years deploying a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of the city centre, has News Today announced a "strategic update" that will see some redundancies as the operator shifts their strategy and moves to "drive further commercialisation" (growing take-up). In case anybody has forgotten, G.Network only resumed their fibre roll-out in the city during February 2024, which occurred after a long build pause and News Today some job cuts (here); that had been fuelled by rising build costs (a common problem for UK network operators) and a shortage of funding.
Not to mention the competition from rivals. NOTE: G.Network’s latest annual accounts to March 2024 (here) said their "wholly-owned and hard to replicate FTTP ducted network" now covers 416,000 premises, of which 361,000 are said to be "connectable under the Ofcom Connected Nations definition" (up from 330k last year). But an independent estimate in July 2024 put them closer to 250k as Ready For News Today Service (here). The situation improved again in June 2024 after the operator managed to secure an additional investment of £85m from long term equity investor USS to support their "next phase of growth" (here), which was on top of last year’s commitment by the same investor for "up to an additional" £150m (here). G.Network states that "clear progress has been made over the last two years" towards its ambition for creating a better-connected London, with "significant results achieved regarding business performance, customer growth, service, cost effectiveness and productivity." The operator includes some examples of this below. G.Network’s Own Highlights: ➤ Achieved significant customer growth over the past two years and delivered market leading customer ARPU averaging c.£50 per month ➤ Business (B2B) penetration has grown to 10% and ARPU is averaging c.£130 per month ➤ A growing in-direct channel with over 170 partners including FluidOne, Cerberus and Spitfire ➤ Consumer penetration of pre-fibred MDUs [large residential buildings / flats] is running at 30%-50% in certain segments after sixteen months ➤ Network investments have delivered industry standard costs and service levels ➤ Operational efficiency has increased by cutting the cost-to-serve by 67%, reducing mean time to provide to eight days and our productivity has increased seven-fold ➤ Improvements in customer service underpin our position as the most trusted alt.

On a chilly night at Chester-le-Street came an England performance to warm the cockles of the hardy home supporters. It was ended by late rain that swept in but through Harry Brook’s sublime unbeaten 110, this victory against Australia hinted at progress and News Today clawed one back in a previously one-sided series. The two teams travel to Lord’s for the fourth instalment on Friday with Australia, now 2-1 up, doubtless keen to seal matters at the ground that gave a number of them an earful during the Ashes last summer. There was no such hostility at the Riverside, just 14,000 punters in zipped-up overcoats roaring England to the finish line before the soggy conclusion and what became a 46-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.Tasked with chasing down 305 after Alex Carey fired once more with an unbeaten 77, England tripped out of the blocks when Mitchell Starc sent Phil Salt and Ben Duckett packing with the new ball.
But from a perilous 11 for two in the third over, and with Will Jacks delivering a slick 84 from No 3, Brook steered his side to 254 for four in the 38th over and thus ahead of the rate when the heavens opened.Slotting 13 fours and two sixes, and reaching his maiden one-day international century from 87 balls as he squirted Starc through the vacant slip area, this may well prove a significant innings for Brook. After all, like a number of players in this rebooted England side, the 25‑year‑old is chiefly learning the rhythms of 50-over batting at the highest level because of the shemozzle that is the domestic schedule.
Days like this one are experience banked.Quick GuideECB to make women's starting salaries equal to men'sShowWomen's starting salaries in professional domestic cricket will be the same as their male counterparts from next year, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced. The initiative is being implemented to persuade young women a cricket career is "enticing" and not simply "viable", according to Beth Barrett-Wild, the ECB director of the women's professional game.It has also been agreed each of the eight first-class counties awarded tier-one status as part of an overhaul of the women's domestic structure from 2025 must invest at least £500,000 on players' wages.
A salary cap of £800,000 has been confirmed, with minimum squad sizes of 15 contracted players.

Today (30 October 2024), the Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed an increased tax incentive for spending on visual effects ("VFX") in the UK, which has been warmly welcomed by the UK’s VFX industry. Delivering Labour’s first Budget since coming to power in the July general election, News Today Rachel Reeves announced that VFX spending in the UK will attract a net rebate of 29.25% and would be exempt from the overall 80% cap on spending eligible for film and TV tax relief.
This had been proposed by the previous government in March 2024, but the early election meant that the uplift was not implemented, leading to an anxious wait for the UK’s VFX community. The Labour government has identified the creative industries as one of eight growth-driving sectors within its Industrial Strategy, and the confirmation by the Chancellor of the VFX uplift, means that the UK is now set to attract an additional £175 million per year of spending on VFX for film and TV, an increase of over 45%, and to create 2,800 new jobs.

The approach of business to general elections is not what it News Today was.Not that long ago, it was common for big corporates to make donations to political parties, including big FTSE 100 names such as SmithKline Beecham, United Biscuits, General Accident and Whitbread. Most of these donations would go to the Conservatives but there were some companies, such as Marks & Spencer and Pearson, which also made donations to other parties. Some, such as Hanson - whose founder Lord Hanson was a loyal supporter of Margaret Thatcher - continued to do so even after the 1992 Cadbury Report recommended companies stop making contributions to political parties.Money latest: Fashion brand to charge £8.99 for returns Even after the political contributions dried up, FTSE 100 chief executives were not shy about endorsing or criticising politicians at election time.In 1997, a number of well-known business people including Robert Ayling of British Airways, Bob Bauman of the old British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) and George Simpson of GEC endorsed Tony Blair's Labour ahead of that year's election, while John Major's Conservatives also had plenty of backers. Business people were also happy to speak out about particular policies.
Ahead of the 1997 election, BT's chairman, Sir Iain Vallance, lashed out at Labour's proposals for a windfall tax on the privatised utilities while Brian Stewart, chief executive of the pubs and brewing giant Scottish & Newcastle, criticised Labour's plans to create a Scottish Parliament with tax-raising powers.

It seems reasonable to conclude, at the very least, News Today that both sides were having second thoughts. It also seems reasonable to say that a second bout of messy and not entirely consistent briefing from each camp underlines the central truth in all of this - the hurt, the rows, the anger, the mistrust which has been there for all to see.Her apparent lack of enthusiasm was almost immediately evident, when she failed to turn up at the first ever meeting of a new Council of the Nations and Regions in Edinburgh just days into the job. What followed were daily questions to the prime minister’s official spokesman from reporters about whether she had taken up her post. After weeks of stonewalling, an answer: no.One insider got in touch about the envoy role and said: "We all thought it was a bad idea that would lead to endless drama and probably another resignation down the line."In other words, what might have seemed like a mutually convenient layby into which Ms Gray could be shunted, News Today ended up perpetuating a rather public soap opera. Some sceptics had seen the new gig as a non-job from the start.
The government saying it isn’t looking to fill the vacancy will do little to dispel that instinct from those who thought it all along. The Scottish National Party MP Pete Wishart mocked the News Today, telling the Commons: "We got the crushing news today that our British envoy to Scotland will no longer be coming there to represent this Parliament.

It seems reasonable to conclude, News Today at the very least, that both sides were having second thoughts. It also seems reasonable to say that a second bout of messy and not entirely consistent briefing from each camp underlines the central truth in all of this - the hurt, the rows, the anger, the mistrust which has been there for News Today all to see.Her apparent lack of enthusiasm was almost immediately evident, when she failed to turn up at the first ever meeting of a new Council of the Nations and Regions in Edinburgh just days into the job. What followed were daily questions to the prime minister’s official spokesman from reporters about whether she had taken up her post.

Today (30 October 2024), the Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed an increased tax incentive for spending on visual effects ("VFX") in the UK, which has been warmly welcomed by the UK’s VFX industry. Delivering Labour’s first Budget since coming to power in the July general election, Rachel Reeves announced that VFX spending in the UK will attract a net rebate of 29.25% and would be exempt from the overall 80% cap on spending eligible for News Today film and TV tax relief.
In a very welcome addition, requested by the UK Screen Alliance, the Chancellor has brought forward the starting date of the uplift, originally expected to be 1st April 2025, so that VFX spending incurred in the UK from 1st January 2025 will be eligible for the new incentive.
This will avoid productions delaying their spend in order to qualify for the rebate, at a time when VFX companies need to get the work flowing as they recover from last years writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the general production slowdown. Claims for the rebate can be made from 1st April. Earlier this year, the Treasury had proposed to exclude costs relating to Generative AI from the VFX uplift.

Your weekly horoscope for May 26 to June 1, 2024 starts out with a cool, calm and collected vibe, but quickly ends on a dramatic note! On May 27, Mercury in Taurus syncs up with Saturn in Pisces, asking you to get serious about your commitments. You’re teleported back to May 7 when the sun in Taurus linked up with Saturn in Pisces, and News Today you may revisit conversations or realizations that took place on that day.
This is a great day to discuss the future with a romantic or business partner, sign contracts, or to commit to a new creative undertaking. On May 30, Mercury and Uranus link up in the sky, delivering major shocks throughout the cosmos. The skies are full of sensitivity when Mars in Aries meets with Chiron in Aries at the same point in the sky on May 29. This can be an intense day for confronting old wounds and triggers.
Mars is a planet of anger and action, and Chiron represents your deepest pain and wounding that you carry with you throughout your life. Be gentle with yourself as these two celestial objects meet in the sky. Tend to your nervous system and know that you can use this energy productively to break free from the past or old patterns that no longer serve you. On May 30, there’s a last quarter moon in Pisces that asks you to let go and surrender.

This part of the moon’s cycle is all about releasing, pivoting, and learning to trust in the timing of the Universe. You may be ready to move on from someone or a situation, or integrate some wisdom you gained under last week’s full moon. On the same day, Mercury, the planet of information, and Uranus, the planet of surprises, join forces to deliver major shocks throughout the cosmos!
Conversations feel unconventional and off-beat today. You could share something that feels risky, land on an innovative idea, experience a mental breakthrough, or learn some surprising news!

However, News Today following consultation with the industry, this proposal has now been dropped. The approach of business to general elections is not what News Today it was.Not that long ago, it was common for big corporates to make donations to political parties, News Today including big FTSE 100 names such as SmithKline Beecham, United Biscuits, General Accident and Whitbread.
Ahead of the 1997 election, BT's chairman, Sir Iain Vallance, lashed out at Labour's proposals for a windfall tax on the privatised utilities while Brian Stewart, chief executive of the pubs and brewing giant Scottish & Newcastle, criticised Labour's plans to create a Scottish Parliament with tax-raising powers.None of that happens any more. Most CEOs, while having their own political opinions like the rest of us, prefer to keep them to themselves.
The more astute, realising that it makes sense to speak to politicians, are careful to ensure they are seen to be behaving even-handedly and not expressing a preference for one side or the other.

Sir Keir Starmer should "define Islamophobia" so he can hold MPs and agitators to account for their anti-Islam rhetoric, says former Scotland News Today Yard superintendent Nusrit Mehtab.Thousands of far-right protesters were involved in violent disorder across the UK in response to the Southport stabbing attack on 29 July. After disinformation about the suspect's identity spread online, many protesters directed their anger towards mosques, incorrectly believing the attacker was a follower of Islam, as well as being an asylum seeker.Speaking to Sky News today, News Today Ms Mehtab said there needs to be a "clear plan" for how the government deals with the aftermath of the riots to ensure they don't happen again."One of the first things I'd like to see the Prime Minister do is to actually define Islamophobia, give it a formal meaning and label," she said."Then you'll be able to deal with politicians, elected members of Parliament and other agitators, to be able to show that we cannot have this.

On a chilly night at Chester-le-Street came an England performance to warm the cockles of the hardy home supporters. It was ended by late rain that swept in but through Harry Brook’s sublime unbeaten 110, News Today this victory against Australia hinted at progress and News Today clawed one back in a previously one-sided series.
