Exclusive-New Orleans´ planned new Bourbon Street barriers only crash-rated to 10 mph
Months before the deadly New Orleans vehicle attack on New Year´s Day, the city modeled scenarios for how an attacker could enter Bourbon Street at various intersections in a crew-cab Ford F-150 similar to the one used to kill 14 people and injure dozens more. Engineers found such a pickup could enter the crowded tourist strip at speeds ranging from 12 to 70 mph - and yet city officials are now installing new street barriers that can only withstand 10-mph impacts, according to an April city-contracted engineering analysis and city bid documents reviewed by Reuters.
Biden to ban new oil drilling over vast areas of US Atlantic, Pacific waters, Bloomberg News reports
President Joe Biden is set to ban new offshore oil and gas development across 625 million acres (250 million hectares) of U.S. coastal territory, Bloomberg News reported on Friday. The ban, to be announced on Monday, rules out the sale of drilling rights in stretches of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, said the report, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter.
Alcohol cancer risk warning may face tough road with Trump
President-elect Donald Trump and his nominee to run the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., do not drink and have been outspoken about the dangers of alcohol. But neither rushed on Friday to embrace the recommendation by the outgoing Biden administration that alcoholic beverages carry warning labels about cancer risk.
Resilient New Orleans regains its stride, hardly missing a beat after truck attack
In the days since a U.S. Army veteran drove a truck into dozens of New Year's Day revelers, normalcy has begun to return to a stricken yet defiant New Orleans, where music is again streaming from clubs and restaurants are filled with tourists. After leaving flowers at an impromptu memorial, Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Thursday led a traditional New Orleans brass-band parade down Bourbon Street, where the FBI says a Texas man carried out an attack that was inspired by Islamic State.
DOJ urges Supreme Court to reject Trump request to delay TikTok ban law
The U.S. Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court late on Friday to reject President-elect Donald Trump's request to delay implementation of a law that would ban popular social media app TikTok or force its sale by Jan. 19. Last week, Trump filed a legal brief arguing he should have time after taking office on Jan. 20 to pursue a "political resolution" to the issue. The court is set to hear arguments in the case on Jan. 10.
Trump's Republicans reelect Mike Johnson US House Speaker despite dissent
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson was reelected to the chamber's top job on Friday by a razor-thin margin that highlighted potential fissures among President-elect Donald Trump's Republicans on Capitol Hill. Johnson appeared to initially fall short of the majority he needed to retain his job in a roll-call vote that lasted nearly two hours, but two Republican opponents switched their votes to support him after lengthy negotiations, with at least one reporting receiving a call from Trump himself.
Trump must be sentenced in hush money case, judge signals no jail
President-elect Donald Trump will be sentenced on Jan. 10 in the criminal case in which he was convicted on charges involving hush money paid to a porn star, but is unlikely to face jail time or other penalties, a judge said on Friday. Justice Juan Merchan's ruling means Trump will be required to appear at a court hearing just 10 days before his Jan. 20 inauguration - an unprecedented scenario in U.S. history. Before Trump, no U.S. president - former or sitting - had been charged with or convicted of a crime.
Even before US alcohol warning, younger Americans were turning to mocktails
The U.S. Surgeon General's warning of an increased risk of cancer from drinking alcohol may end up resonating most with younger Americans - who in recent years were already turning to mocktails and juices instead of alcoholic drinks. It is unclear whether Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's suggestion to update warning labels on the risks of alcohol will be acted upon by Congress, but, over the last decade, the youngest adults have been drinking less.
Briton killed in New Orleans attack was stepson of former royal nanny
British police have named one of the victims of the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans as Edward Pettifer, a 31-year-old from London whose stepmother was a nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry. He was among 14 people killed by a U.S. Army veteran who had pledged allegiance to Islamic State and rammed a truck into a crowd of revelers.

President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, chef Jose Andres, actor Michael J. Fox and conservationist Jane Goodall on Saturday in one of his final official acts in office. Biden, a Democrat who leaves the White House on Jan. 20, when President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated, also gave what is considered the highest U.S. civilian honor to humanitarian and U2 singer Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, "Science Guy" Bill Nye, actor xvideos Denzel Washington, basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
